Campaigning for Safer Roads

Our objective is simple. We want to increase road safety across Herefordshire and reduce road traffic collisions involving young drivers. Our campaign for safer drivers lead to the creation of ‘Young Driver Experience’.

Young Driver Experience

Established in 2019, the inaugural ‘YDE’ event was held over 3 days and was attended by 64 students (aged 14-17) who actively took part in the pilot scheme funded by the Police & Crime Commissioner.

The first event was a huge success for the students, who felt we had given them basic skills and information towards starting their path to becoming learner drivers.

Since this first event, we’ve continued to grow with the support of the local organisations. This has enabled us to deliver much-needed experiences for the young people of Herefordshire, to help them be safer drivers - with the goal of reducing the high mortality statistics in the 17-25 age group.

About YDE

Our YDE events give 14-17 year olds the opportunity to drive a car, with instructors from Go Driving, around a controlled course hosted at Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College (HLSNC).

The day comprises 2 hours of driving accompanied by a variety of workshops, including:

  • Basic car maintenance, delivered by Oldfield Garage

  • Basic roadside first aid, delivered by Hereford First Aid

  • Road safety and cycle safety, delivered by Herefordshire Council and Safer Road Partnerships

  • An introduction to the theory test, delivered by Go Driving

  • A demonstration of the effects of drink/drug and equipment in police car by Hereford Police
